One of the special things about building a custom screened porch is that you can design and build nearly anything you can dream up. This Brentwood porch was a favorite for both its design and execution as the hip roof architectural structure of the original home was expanded to cover the entire depth of the screened porch. Our goal is always to create a space that looks original to the home in both aesthetics and logical layout, so we worked to create the illusion that this backyard addition was always part of the original home. And with it’s spiral staircase, chandelier, and mix of natural colors, the exterior of this porch was rivaled only by its indoor spaces.
Transform your home’s exterior
A front porch is a powerful way to transform the exterior of your home. One of our favorite examples of this transformative power also comes out of Brentwood, TN in this beautiful, custom front porch addition. This porch brought dramatic change to the front of their Brentwood home. While the home itself was already quite beautiful, this new front porch design added to its air of elegance and created a strong first impression with two sets of double white PermaCast® columns that frame the front door. The homeowners also loved that the columns are durable and low-maintenance making them as practical as they are beautiful.

In this showcase retrospective, these Brentwood, TN, homeowners had a beautiful home with an elevated deck overlooking their pool but wanted to a protected outdoor space. They envisioned a screened outdoor room where they could enjoy fresh air without the nuisance of pesky insects. With an elegant screened-in porch for entertaining their home would be complete. Our team at The Porch Company was happy to bring that vision to life for them.
The family had been using the underdeck area as a covered porch, so we retained that aspect by transforming the space from a deck and covered area into a hip roof screened porch and covered porch combination.
With this transformation, the clients gained an additional room to enjoy where they could look out into the treetops, watch swimmers in the pool below, and relax in comfort and peace in a much more elevated space.
Make it your own
The simple elegance of a screened porch exterior can say so much. We love this Brentwood porch because it is understated yet precise. We designed a porch roughly twice the size of the original so the homeowners could enjoy using their screened porch more than they were the adjacent open deck. And while the clients were willing to sacrifice the deck to gain a bigger screened porch, they retained a space for sitting in thein the form of an outdoor conversation nook.
To create the new, larger porch, we were able to use the existing brick piers. We then redid the walls, added a shed roof over the previously uncovered deck area, added a new railing system with bronze-colored aluminum spindles and used low-maintenance post caps and sleeves on the railing posts along the stairs and on the landing to dress up the exterior of the porch.
Our design for the porch exterior included all-white trim to match that of the home—our general recommendation as it looks more natural to the existing home and creates a more cohesive, natural feel for the addition.

This beautiful porch interior is highlighted by the open rafter ceiling. The hip roofline gives the interior space both movement and interest. The substantial beams offer a visual focal point but also serve for mounting ceiling fans and surround sound speakers. The warm wood finish is the perfect contrasting element to the subtle whites and greys used throughout the rest of the porch. We also placed radiant heating at the wall-to-ceiling transition, which will keep porch-goers cozy in cooler temps. No detail inside the porch was an afterthought, but each exemplifies the exacting methods by which The Porch Company creates beautiful and usable outdoor living spaces.
Enjoy the best of both worlds
We loved this Brentwood, TN project particularly because of how well it blended both indoor and outdoor living spaces. This project consisted of an expansive custom screened porch showcasing a rustic stone outdoor fireplace. Just beyond the porch, a raised curvilinear paver patio is completed by an outdoor kitchen. Having an outdoor living space like this not only adds value to a home but it serves as an intimate refuge for family to gather while still offering enough space to entertain a crowd.
For this porch, the client wanted the design to look like a natural extension of the home and the outdoors. We started with the rustic warmth of the stacked stone foundation and then carefully matched the colors to the home’s existing hues making sure still to compliment the new paver patio. The shed/gable/flat combination roofline addressed all the needs of the addition from a structural and aesthetic perspective while a classic, flat beadboard ceiling sits underneath that complex, dual exterior roofline.
The porch interior is finished with our signature 10” boxed columns with crown moldings and Porch Company picket panels. The wood-burning stone fireplace takes its spot at the opposite end of the porch and features a raised hearth and wooden mantel made from 100-year-old reclaimed barn wood enhanced by the warm tongue & groove cypress flooring which is a breeze to maintain and brings even more warmth into the space.
